Philippine spices: turmeric, ginger, and what's worth sourcing

3 min read

When people think of spice-producing countries, the Philippines doesn't usually make the list. India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka dominate the global spice trade. But there's a smaller, growing market for Philippine-grown spices, especially in the wellness and health food space.

Ginger

The Philippines produces close to 29,000 metric tons of ginger annually. Most of it is consumed domestically (Filipino cooking uses ginger constantly, from soups to stir-fries to the traditional salabat ginger tea), but there's export potential in processed forms.

Fresh ginger exports from the Philippines are currently tiny. The opportunity is in value-added products: ginger powder, ginger tea, ginger candies, and ginger extract. These travel better, have longer shelf lives, and command higher prices than raw ginger.

For buyers in the health food and wellness space, Philippine ginger offers a story that resonates with consumers who want to know where their ingredients come from.

Turmeric

Philippine turmeric is used in traditional medicine and increasingly in the global wellness market. Turmeric powder, turmeric tea blends, and turmeric supplements are the main export-ready products. Production is smaller than ginger, and most comes from smallholder farmers.

The curcumin content (the compound that gives turmeric its health claims and bright yellow colour) varies by growing conditions and variety. If you're sourcing turmeric for supplements or health products, ask for lab results showing curcumin percentage. This is the number that matters to your customers.

Black pepper

Philippine black pepper production is small and has been declining over the past five years. It's not competitive with Vietnam or India on volume or price. However, there is a niche market for single-origin Philippine pepper, similar to how certain Southeast Asian origins command a premium for their distinct flavour. Whether this niche grows depends on whether Philippine producers invest in quality and branding.

The real opportunity

Philippine spices are not going to compete with major producing countries on volume. That's not the play. The opportunity is in:

Wellness products that combine multiple Philippine ingredients. Think turmeric and ginger tea blends, salabat (traditional ginger brew), or immunity-focused combinations.

Artisanal and single-origin products for specialty food retailers who want something their competitors don't carry.

Ingredients for Filipino food products targeting the Filipino diaspora market, which is large and growing in the US, Middle East, and Europe.

Finding suppliers

Because Philippine spice production is mostly smallholder-based, finding reliable suppliers with consistent quality and export capability takes effort. Cooperatives and mid-sized processors are your best bet for volume and consistency.
